Deena Mohamed
Third-Year Medical Student at IU School of Medicine, Co-Chair of 2020 Region 5 Conference
Deena Mohamed is a third-year medical student at IU School of Medicine (IUSM). She was born and raised in Plainfield, IN. She received her first Bachelor of Science Degree at Purdue University in Biology. She received her second Bachelor of Science Degree at Indiana State University in Aviation, with a pre-med concentration followed by a post-baccalaureate in the Masters of Science in Medical Science Program at IUSM. Her interest in medicine began when she was a child and she watched her older sister, Nora, suffer as her physicians ignored her symptoms. This fueled Deena towards an interest in medicine and a commitment to healthcare disparities. Ms. Mohamed serves many leadership roles at IUSM. She currently serves as one of the co-chairs for the Student National Medical Association Region 5 Medical Education Conference hosted by IUSM. She also serves as the IUSM Medical Student Council Vice President of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion. Her interests include social determinants of health, advocacy and healthcare disparities. Outside of school, Ms. Mohamed enjoys spending time with her family and friends and her puppy, Angel. She also enjoys traveling, working out, and flying.
Trilliah Fazle
Second-Year Medical Student at IU School of Medicine, Co-Chair of 2020 Region 5 Conference.
Trilliah Fazle is a second-year medical student at IU School of Medicine (IUSM). She received her Bachelor of Science Degree at Purdue University in Athletic Training, with a pre-med concentration. Prior to starting medical school, she worked as an Athletic Trainer serving middle school and high school athletic populations. Currently, Trilliah serves as the co-President for the Student National Medical Association Indian University School of Medicine Chapter. Additionally, she is one of the co-chairs for the Student National Medical Association Region 5 Medical Education Conference. When not studying she enjoys spending time with her family and friends, working out, and baking and traveling.
Dean Hess
Dr. Jay L. Hess serves as Indiana University’s Executive Vice President for University Clinical Affairs and Dean of the School of Medicine - the largest medical school in the United States, with nine campuses, more than 2,000 students, and 6,500 full-time, part-time and volunteer faculty. As one of four executive vice presidents of Indiana University, Dr. Hess is charged with guiding the university’s clinical affairs strategy.
As a physician-scientist, Dr. Hess is driven to improve care for patients and is guided by a commitment to transforming health in Indiana and around the world. Since becoming dean, he has overseen a more than 70 percent increase in research funding from the National Institutes of Health, led the school through a comprehensive curriculum reform and successful reaccreditation, and strengthened the relationship with IU Health, its primary clinical partner and one of the nation’s premier academic medical centers.
Under his leadership, IU School of Medicine’s major initiatives include:
- Investment in new educational and research facilities across the state
- Implementation of the IU Precision Health Initiative, a bold plan to develop new therapies and improve outcomes for patients with multiple myeloma, triple negative breast cancer, diabetes, childhood sarcoma and Alzheimer’s disease
- Bringing leading-edge therapies to Indiana, includinggenomically-guided therapies and CAR-T immunotherapy
- Securing prestigious Comprehensive status for the Indiana University Melvin and Bren Simon Cancer Center from the National Cancer Institute
Prior to moving to Indiana in 2013, Dr. Hess served for eight years as the Carl V. Weller Professor and chair of the Department of Pathology and professor of pathology and internal medicine at the University of Michigan. He previously served as director of hematopathology at the University of Pennsylvania and as assistant professor of pathology at Washington University School of Medicine.
Dr. Hess earned his medical and doctorate degrees from the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine and completed residency training in anatomic pathology and fellowships in hematopathology and surgical pathology at Brigham and Women’s Hospital. He holds a certificate in business administration from The Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania, and a master’s degree in health services administration from the University of Michigan School of Public Health.

Dr. Wallach is the Executive Associate Dean (EAD) for Educational Affairs and Institutional Improvement for Indiana University School of Medicine (IUSM), and Executive Vice President/Education (EVP) for IU Health (IUH). He holds the Dolores and John Read Senior Professorship in Medical Education and has been selected as an IU Bicentennial Professor. In his capacity as EAD, Dr. Wallach and his team provide oversight for UME, GME, CME, a number of health professional programs, simulation, and all 8 of the 4-year regional campuses. IUSM is the largest UME program in the United States, and the GME program includes 1200residents and fellows. IUH is the largest health system in Indiana, with over a dozen hospitals and multiple outpatient facilities statewide. In his role as EVP, Dr. Wallach and his team provide oversight to academic programs within the health system. A strong believer in cultivating a culture of innovation, Wallach encourages learners, faculty and other constituents to propose bold ideas that will improve medical education across the continuum for both IUSM and IUH.
He previously served as Vice Dean for Academic Affairs at the Medical College of Georgia, where he was elected as a faculty member to the Gold Humanism Honor Society, and was honored with the Leon Henri Charbonnier Endowed Chair in Medicine. He served as Vice Dean for Medical Education at New York Medical College, and was honored with NYMC’s Leadership in Medical Education Award. Prior to NYMC, Dr. Wallach served as Vice Dean for Educational Affairs at the University of South Florida Morsani College of Medicine.
Wallach completed with high distinction his bachelor of arts degree in chemistry from Rollins College in 1980. In 1984, he earned his doctor of medicine degree from and was elected to the Alpha Omega Alpha Honor Society at the University of South Florida Morsani College of Medicine, where he also received the college’s distinguished alumnus award in 2011. Wallach completed his residency in internal medicine at the University of South Florida, where he served as the chief resident in 1987. He completed a faculty fellowship in general internal medicine at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill in 1992.
Dr. Wallach is a general internist who has had clinical interests in hypertension and lipid disorders.
With high quality education as a focus, Dr. Wallach has been the recipient of many educational awards, including election to the Gold Humanism Honor Society as a faculty member.

Alvaro Tori, MD
Associate Dean for Diversity Affairs at IU School of Medicine
Alvaro Tori, MD, joined the IU School of Medicine (IUSM) faculty in 2007 after completing his Pediatric Internship, Residency and Chief Residency at IUSM. Dedicated to the academic mission, he focuses on teaching pediatric critical care in a family-centered care environment. He also serves as Medical Director, Respiratory Therapy at Riley Hospital for Children at IU Health.
Dr. Tori's second appointment is as Associate Dean for Diversity Affairs at Indiana University School of Medicine. He is dedicated to improving recruitment, retention and promotion of minoritized learners and faculty while at the same time improving the working and learning environment where everyone, regardless of their background and identities that we bring, feel welcomed, respected, inspired and supported to fully participate at IUSM.
Dr. Tori also develops programs to ensure that each individual has the knowledge, skills, and attitudes that allow them to work effectively with patients and their families, as well as with other members of the medical community regardless of their backgrounds. His personal experience, as a Latino, an immigrant and a member of the LGBTQ community enables him to truly understand the importance of diversity and its acceptance.
Emily Walvoord, MD
Dr. Emily Walvoord is a graduate of Miami University (Ohio) and Northwestern University Medical School. She was an intern, resident and chief resident at Children’s Memorial Hospital/ Northwestern University and completed her pediatric endocrinology fellowship at Indiana University School of Medicine/ Riley Hospital for Children and stayed on as faculty. As the Associate Dean for Student Affairs, Dr. Walvoord focuses oversees the enhanced statewide delivery and continuous improvement in the areas of academic advising and career mentoring, wellness, and development of a new student success program, among other services, at all nine campuses. Prior to moving into her student affairs role, Dr. Walvoord was an assistant dean for faculty affairs and professional development and an associate program director for the pediatric residency program at IUSM. Dr. Walvoord continues to care for children with endocrine disorders as well as mentor and teach learners. Her research and clinical interests have focused on hypopituitarism, growth hormone deficiency, and early puberty.
Patricia A. Treadwill, MD, FAAD, FAAP
Chief Diversity Officer and Special Advisor to the Dean
Dr. Treadwell is board certified in Pediatrics and Dermatology and a Fellow of the AAP and AAD. She is a graduate of Cornell University School of Medicine and completed residencies in Pediatrics and Dermatology at the Indiana University Medical Center. In 1983, she became an Assistant Professor of Pediatrics and Dermatology at Indiana University School of Medicine (IUSM) and is now Professor Emeritus of Pediatrics and Dermatology. In addition, she is Special Adviser to the Dean and Chief Diversity Officer of IUSM.
Dr. Treadwell has been involved with issues of health care disparities for much of her medical career. She has been a practicing pediatrician at Forest Manor Community Health Care Center (in a medically underserved area) in Indianapolis, one-half day weekly for the past 30 years.
Dr. Treadwell is President-elect for the Society for Pediatric Dermatology. She is past Chairperson of the AAP Dermatology Section.
Dr. Treadwell received The Alvin H. Jacobs Award from the AAP section on Dermatology “In Recognition of her Outstanding Contribution to the Field of Pediatric Dermatology”. Awarded 7/11/15 at the Society for Pediatric Dermatology Annual Meeting in Boston. She also received the “Breakthrough Woman” Award presented by the Coalition of 100 Black Women 7/2016. She was also awarded the Women Warriors Award from the Indianapolis Chapter of the Links on 11/10/18.
